The blend of spices adds extra flavor when you use it as a salt substitute because it's not just salt, it's a blend of salt along with simple ingredients from your spice cabinet.
And the best part about making your own salt blend is that you can adjust the amounts of the spices in the seasoning mixture according to your personal preferences.
That's one of the top reasons why I love making my own copycat seasonings. I can adjust the amounts of the ingredients to my personal taste and you can too.
Experiment with this recipe and, either use it as a starting point or use it as is, and make your own version that you and your family love.
Making homemade spice blends also can save you money, especially if you're like me and buy all the spices at the dollar store.
Store the seasoning salt in a mason jar and use it to season foods before cooking them or put some in a salt shaker and sprinkle on foods after cooking them.
I especially love to flavor french fries and potato wedges with this copycat recipe.
It also adds a unique flavor to savory dishes, such as chicken thighs, pork chops and steaks, when you use it in place of salt.
Elevate your burgers and mix some into the ground beef before shaping into patties.
Stir into mashed potatoes and soups too!

Swirls of Flavor Recipe Tips
- I do not recommend using kosher salt in this recipe because the grains of kosher salt will be too large and the larger crystal will not blend evenly with the other spices. Instead, the large grains of kosher salt will separate and sink to the bottom of the mixture because the crystals are bigger and heavier than the other ingredients.
- Add a pinch of cayenne if you want a hint of heat in this seasoning salt
- You can halve this recipe if you only want to make 6 Tablespoons of the seasoning.
- I like to make the full recipe and divide it into two small mason jars to give as gifts.
Substitutions
- You can use fine salt in place of the regular table salt.
- For a smoky salt you can replace the paprika with smoked paprika
Storage
- Store your homemade seasoning salt in an airtight container, such as a mason jar.
- Store it in a cool dry place for one year and possibly up to two years.
- As always, I find it helpful to visit the FDA website for food storage guidelines
