This is a quick overview of how to make this air fryer pickle recipe. Scroll down for the full recipe instructions and ingredient amounts in the recipe card below
- Step 1: Place the pickle slices in a single layer on paper towels. Top with additional paper towels and press gently until the liquid is absorbed. Discard the paper towels.
- Step 2: Toss the pickles in the flour mixture until lightly coated. Then dip them in the beaten eggs and then in the breadcrumbs to coat.
- Step 3: Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil cooking spray and arrange the pickle slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket leaving space between the slices. You will need to do this in two batches.
- Step 4: Spray the tops of the pickles with olive oil spray and cook at 350F for 10 minutes until golden, turning halfway.
Hint: It is important to pat the pickle slices with paper towels to absorb any pickle juice so that the flour mixture can adhere to the slices.
Oven Directions
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the pickle chips in your oven by following these baking directions:
- Preheat your oven to 425F.
- Spray a baking sheet with olive oil cooking spray.
- Prepare the pickles as directed in the recipe card below.
- Arrange the pickles in a single layer on the prepared pan and spray the tops with olive oil cooking spray.
- Bake for 20 minutes, turning halfway through the cooking time.
Expert recipe tips
- Make them spicy - Add cayenne pepper to the flour mixture or hot sauce to the egg mixture for extra heat.
- Pickle Slices – Be sure to pat the pickle slices with paper towels to absorb any pickle juice so that the flour mixture can adhere to the slices
- Serve with Main Dishes - Serve fried pickle chips with burgers, hot dogs, or grilled sandwiches.
- Avoid overcrowding - Do not crowd the slices in the air fryer basket. Overcrowding will prevent the pickles from getting crispy
- Make in batches – To avoid overcrowding you will need to air fry the pickles in two batches.
Substitutions
- Pickles – I made this recipe with bread and butter pickle slices but you can substitute dill pickle slices and make dill pickle chips or use spicy pickles
- Pickle spears – Prefer pickle spears? Go ahead and substitute spears for the slices but you may need to add additional cooking time when making pickle spears
- Gluten-Free - Use gluten-free flour and gluten-free breadcrumbs.
- Breadcrumbs – Seasoned panko breadcrumbs can be used in place of plain panko breadcrumbs
- Make it Italian – Add dried Italian seasoning to the flour mixture and use Italian seasoned breadcrumbs instead of the panko breadcrumbs
Equipment
- Air fryer
- Paper towels
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Bowls
Storage and Reheating
- If you have leftover pickle chips, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- To reheat, air fry at 350°F for 3-5 minutes until crispy again.
- Reheating pickle chips n the microwave is not recommended because microwaving will make them soggy.
- See more guidelines at USDA.gov.
