How to make tacos in the oven
This is a quick overview of how to make this recipe. Scroll down for the full recipe instructions and ingredient amounts in the recipe card below

- Step 1: In a large skillet cook the ground beef, taco seasoning and tomato paste over medium-high heat until the beef is browned, stirring occasionally.

- Step 2: Meanwhile, brush the bottom of a 7 x 11-inch baking pan with 1 Tablespoon oil. Arrange 4 tortillas in the prepared pan overlapping with an overhang over all four sides of the pan.

- Step 3: Sprinkle half (3/4 cup) of the cheese in the center of the tortillas. Top with the beef mixture and the remaining cheese.

- Step 4: Place the remaining tortillas over the beef and cheese and fold the overhanging tortillas up and in. Brush with the remaining oil.

- Step 5: Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the heavy pot and baking pan and bake for another 15 minutes or until golden brown. Garnish with jalapenos, scallions, sour cream, salsa and cilantro.
Hint: I used a 7-inch x 11-inch baking pan with deep sides but you can use a small baking sheet
Expert recipe tips
- For the best results, preheat your oven to ensure even cooking.
- Brushing the bottom of the pan and the top of the tortillas with oil ensures a crispy result
- I do not recommend using corn tortillas because they are not as pliable as flour tortillas and may crack and break
- Use your favorite salsa and choose from mild, medium, or hot depending on your spice preference.
- Garnish your crunchy taco with your favorite taco toppings
- Lean ground beef will work best in this recipe
- You can double this recipe and make it in a larger sheet pan

Substitutions
- Ground beef - If you prefer a leaner protein, you can swap out ground beef and use ground turkey or ground chicken.
- Tortillas - Corn tortillas work well in place of flour tortillas.
- Taco seasoning – Don’t have taco seasoning? You can make my homemade taco seasoning recipe or just use a mix of chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and paprika.
- Cheese – You can use shredded taco cheese or Monterrey Jack cheese in place of shredded cheddar cheese
- Cilantro - If you’re not a fan of cilantro, fresh parsley can be used as a substitute.
- Salsa - Serve your tacos with pico de gallo or salsa verde in place of salsa
- Tomato paste - Enchilada sauce or taco sauce can replace tomato paste

Variations
- Vegetarian - For a vegetarian option, use black beans, lentils, or a plant-based meat substitute.
- Lactose-free - Dairy-free cheese can be used for a lactose-free version.
- Spicy - Try a spicy version by using chipotle powder or hot sauce in the meat mixture.
- Breakfast taco - For a breakfast twist, scramble eggs with the taco filling.
Equipment
- 7-inch x 11-inch pan
- large skillet
- wooden spoon
- pastry brush
- chef knife
- cutting board
- measuring cups
- measuring spoons

Storage
- Store leftover tacos wrapped individually in foil or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about two days.
- To reheat, keep the taco serving wrapped in foil and reheat it in the oven. This will help to keep it crunchy on the outside.
- You can also remove the foil and reheat your taco in the air fryer.
- To reheat several taco servings, arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet and reheat in the oven at 350°F until warmed through.
- As always, check out more guidelines at USDA.gov.
Ingredients
Taco bake ingredients

- Ground Beef - A classic taco filling, ground beef is rich in flavor and cooks quickly.
- Taco Seasoning - A blend of spices, including cumin, paprika, garlic powder, and chili powder, taco seasoning adds depth and warmth to the dish.
- Tomato Paste - This concentrated tomato paste provides a rich, slightly tangy flavor that rounds out the taco filling.
- Flour Tortillas - Soft and pliable, flour tortillas hold the taco filling and crisp up beautifully in the oven.
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese - Melted cheddar inside adds a creamy, slightly sharp flavor that complements the seasoned beef.
- Canola Oil - Brushing the baking pan and the tortillas with canola oil helps them crisp up in the oven. It has a neutral flavor and a high smoke point, making it ideal to use.
- OPTIONAL GARNISHES
- Sliced Jalapenos - For those who enjoy heat, fresh or pickled jalapenos add a spicy kick and a pop of vibrant color as a garnish.
- Scallions - Also known as green onions, scallions provide a mild onion flavor and a fresh garnish for tacos.
- Salsa - A staple taco topping, salsa adds brightness and acidity, balancing the richness of the meat and cheese.
- Sour Cream - Creamy and tangy, sour cream helps cool down the spice and adds a smooth texture to each bite.
- Shredded Lettuce - adds crunch and fresh flavor as a garnish
- Cilantro - A fresh herb with a citrusy, slightly peppery taste, cilantro is the perfect finishing touch for tacos.
