How to make bang bang sauce
This is a quick overview of how to make this recipe. Scroll down for the full recipe instructions and ingredient amounts in the recipe card below.

- Step 1: Combine mayonnaise, chili sauce, sriracha sauce and honey in a mixing bowl.

- Step 2: Whisk the ingredients together until they are blended.
Hint: You can stir this sauce together but I highly recommend using a whisk to guarantee that all of the ingredients are completely blended together.
Expert recipe tips
- Whisk, or stir, the sauce until it is totally smooth so that all the flavors are totally combined.
- This recipe makes 2 cups of sauce but you can easily halve the recipe to make just 1 cup of sauce.
- Feel free to taste and adjust as you make the recipe. That’s the beauty of making a recipe, you can add more honey for extra sweetness or add more sriracha for additional heat.
- I recommend letting the sauce sit, either at room temperature or in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to marry.
- For the smoothest texture and easiest combining, use room-temperature mayonnaise.
- This sauce will thicken slightly as it chills, making it a great dipping sauce.
- You can also add a splash of rice wine vinegar for added tanginess.
Substitutions
- Mayonnaise – For a lighter version of this mayo-based sauce, you can substitute Greek yogurt or sour cream for mayonnaise.
- Mayonnaise - Full-fat mayonnaise will give you the best flavor, but lighter mayonnaise versions can also be used. Japanese kewpie mayo is also a good alternative.
- Sweet Chili Sauce – You can combine some honey and red pepper flakes or use hot honey if you need a substitute for the Thai sweet chili sauce.
- Sriracha - Chili garlic sauce or or another hot sauce that you love can replace the spicy sriracha.
- Honey - Maple syrup or agave nectar can be used in place of honey as an alternative for a natural sweetener.

Variations
- Extra Sweet Chili Sauce - Add an additional tablespoon of honey or sweet chili sauce, or both!
- Garlic Chili Sauce – After blending the ingredients together stir in fresh minced garlic or garlic powder.
- Lime Bang Bang Sauce – For a hint of a bright citrus flavor, add a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
- Smoky Bang Bang Sauce - Adding smoked paprika will give the sauce a subtle smoky flavor.
- Spicy Bang Bang Sauce – Add more sriracha or add a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes.
Storage
- You can store your homemade Bang Bang sauce or any leftover sauce you may have in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- The sauce may separate while refrigerated so I recommend that you stir the sauce before using it.
- I do not recommend freezing the sauce because mayonnaise-based sauces can separate when thawed.
- See more guidelines at USDA.gov.
