    Chicken Gyros Recipe

    Our recipe for homemade gyros makes it easy to have this Greek favorite at home.

    A simple Greek chicken marinade takes this sandwich to the next level of deliciousness. Red wine vinegar, olive oil, and seasonings are all you need for your chicken gyro marinade that will elevate chicken thighs from plain to bursting with flavor.

    Add in a homemade cucumber dill sauce and you’ll have a taste of Greece in every bite of your grilled chicken sandwich. I guarantee that our homemade gyro sauce will delight your taste buds.

    I love warm pita bread and I’m sure you will too! Simply heat the pitas on the grill or in the microwave when making my gyro recipe.

    The chicken can be marinated and grilled ahead. Just keep the cooked chicken in the refrigerator until you are ready to make your gyros with tzatziki sauce. Slice, assemble and enjoy!

    What is a gyro?

    A gyro is a traditional Greek sandwich of seasoned meat that is served in a pita with red onion, lettuce, tomato and Tzatziki sauce.

    What are gyros made of?

    Gyros are typically made of lamb, chicken or a combination of ground lamb and beef. The meat is seasoned with herbs and spices.

    What is a gyro marinade?

    A gyro marinade is a mixture of spices, oil and vinegar that flavors the uncooked meat before grilling.

    How do you eat a gyro?

    Gyros are typically eaten with the ingredients piled on and wrapped in pita bread or stuffed inside pita bread.

    How to make chicken gyros

    1. Whisk olive oil, vinegar, oregano, basil, garlic powder and kosher salt until blended.
    2. Combine marinade and chicken in a plastic food storage bag and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
    3. Preheat grill for direct heat grilling.
    4. Remove chicken from marinade and discard marinade.
    5. Grill chicken until juices run clear, turning once. Let chicken rest 5 minutes, then slice.
    6. To assemble gyros, top pita breads with sliced chicken, red onion, lettuce and Tzatziki sauce then fold.

    How to make a gyro salad

    You can turn this recipe into a main dish salad too!

    1. Marinate and grill the chicken then slice.
    2. Toss lettuce, red onion and chopped tomato with some of the Tzatziki sauce.
    3. Top with sliced grilled chicken and cut up pita bread for croutons.
    4. Serve remaining Tzatziki sauce on the side.

    • ¼ cup olive oil
