Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak
Back in the day, a Salisbury steak dinner was all the rage, especially when it was a tv dinner that you just popped in the oven to warm up. But homemade is so much better!
And this homemade Salisbury steak recipe is not only better but also easy to make too.
Ground beef is seasoned with onion soup mix, seasoned breadcrumbs and flavorful soup and shaped into ground beef patties.
These beef patties simmer in a flavorful sauce that starts with a can of French onion soup.
Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and onion soup mix and your tastebuds will be doing a happy dance.
I always use my homemade onion soup mix because it's free of preservatives and chemicals and I can control the sodium level. But you can easily use storebought onion soup mix instead.
I love spooning some of the Salisbury sauce over mashed potatoes or buttered noodles and serving with honey butter corn, broccoli or green beans.
Sometimes I shape the seasoned ground beef into mini meatballs and serve them with the sauce over buttered noodles. Yum!
So when you want an easy weeknight dinner, Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak Recipe will be your go-to. A classic recipe that the entire family will love.
Everyone will agree that this is one of the best Salisbury steak recipes ever!

What is Salisbury steak?
Salisbury steak is not actually steak, but rather, it is ground beef that has been seasoned and shaped into patties. So I guess you could say they are like hamburger steaks.
These beef patties simmer in a rich brown gravy that is flavored with ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.

- In a large mixing bowl combine ground beef, egg, ¼ cup of the soup, bread crumbs, 1 Tablespoon onion soup mix and pepper and shape the meat mixture into 6 hamburger patties.
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and brown the patties, turning once.
- Meanwhile, in a bowl combine the remaining soup, water, ketchup, remaining 2 Tablespoons onion soup mix, flour and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until blended.
- Add the sauce mixture to the skillet with the patties and bring to a boil.
- Spoon some of the sauce over the patties.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, covered, until the beef is cooked through, about 20 minutes, occasionally spooning gravy over the patties. Check the temperature of the beef patties with an instant read thermometer. Patties should cook until they are at 160F.
Swirls of Flavor Recipe Tips
- For best results, use lean ground beef.
- Do not crowd the patties in the skillet. Be sure to use a large skillet.
- Shape the seasoned ground beef into meatballs
- Sprinkle with chopped parsley before serving
- There's no salt added to the recipe because the homemade onion soup mix adds salty notes! But you can always season with salt before serving, if desired.
Substitutions
- You can substitute ground turkey for ground beef
- Ground chicken can be used in place of the ground beef
- I love using my homemade onion soup mix (made without preservatives!) but you can use storebought onion soup mix instead
